How to use these hints

Four clues are more than they sound. The nation hint removes most of the football world at once: from every league and every era, only players who represented that country remain. The position hint then splits what is left into four buckets — goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards — which in the modern game often cuts the list to a quarter. The birth year places the player in time: combined with the nation it draws the arc of a career — someone born in 1985 peaked in the late 2000s and early 2010s, while someone born in 1999 is a current star in his prime. The club count is the last brushstroke: a one-club career is a famous story, while a long list of clubs hints at a much-travelled veteran. Put the four together before you guess and you will be very close to the name.

A good opening guess is a famous name from the nation and era the hints point to: the clue cells are measured against a long, well-documented career, so a household player gives the most information per guess. Check the green cells first — nation and position are clean yes-or-no signals — and use the birth-year arrows to halve the field with every guess. Save the in-game 💡 hint for the end: it reveals the nation but costs one of your six guesses — and this page already told you the nation for free.

Playing today's puzzle

Today's footballer is live right now on the game page: one puzzle, six guesses, the same hidden player for everyone in the world. After each guess the board compares your pick with the mystery footballer across the four clues above — nation, position, birth year and clubs — and the arrows ▲ and ▼ point towards the answer's birth year. The puzzle resets at midnight UTC — the morning in Asia and Oceania, the evening in the Americas. The game is free, needs no account, and runs in English, Spanish and Portuguese with the same footballer hidden in all three.

When is the answer published?

The full answer to today's puzzle — the player's name, his complete club career and his major honours — is published tomorrow on the answer page, once the puzzle has closed and a new footballer has taken his place. That one-day delay is deliberate: an answer page can never spoil the puzzle people are still playing. Until then, these hints are as far as this page goes. The archive lists every closed puzzle with its answer, newest first — and replaying one you missed is a good way to warm up for today's puzzle.

Today's hints FAQ

Does this page reveal today's footballer?

No. This page shows hints only — nation, position, birth year and club count. The name and the full career are published one day later on the answer page, after the puzzle has closed.

What hints are shown for today's puzzle?

Four: the footballer's nation, his position (goalkeeper, defender, midfielder or forward), his birth year and the number of clubs in his career. They are the same clues the game itself works with as you play.

How does the birth-year clue work in the game?

The Born column turns green for the exact birth year and yellow within three years, and the arrows ▲ and ▼ show whether the hidden player was born earlier or later than your guess — so every guess narrows the era. On this page you get the exact year up front.

How many guesses do I get, and does a hint cost anything?

Six guesses per puzzle, and the in-game 💡 hint reveals the nation but costs one of the six. On this page the nation already costs you nothing, so all six guesses stay available for names. Play today's puzzle on the game page.

Where can I find yesterday's answer?

In the archive — every closed puzzle is listed with its date and answer, newest first. Each answer is added the day after its puzzle.

Is the game free, and when does a new puzzle appear?

Completely free and account-free, in English, Spanish and Portuguese. A new footballer goes live every day at midnight UTC — the morning in Asia and Oceania, the evening in the Americas.
